Finding Reflection in the Season

Cancer season invites us to slow down, turn inward, and remember that growth isn't always about doing more—it can also come from creating space to feel, rest, and reconnect with ourselves.

What Cancer Season Is Teaching Me About Slowing Down

I'll start with a bit of transparency: I don't consider myself a devoted follower of astrology. However, I do appreciate astrology for something else entirely—the opportunity it gives us to pause, reflect, and consider different perspectives. Like mindfulness, poetry, music, or the changing of the seasons, astrology offers symbols that can help us deepen our understanding of ourselves, if we're willing to approach them with curiosity instead of certainty.

As a therapist, I spend much of my work helping people become more aware of their inner world. We move through life so quickly that we often forget to stop and ask ourselves:

What am I feeling? What do I need right now?

Sometimes a seasonal shift is enough to invite those questions. Whether or not you follow astrology, I believe there is value in using the seasons as gentle reminders to check in with ourselves.

As a Pisces, I'm a true water sign. Water has always felt restorative to me, which is probably why one of my favorite nervous system reminders—for both my clients and myself—is simple: just add water. When our nervous systems become overwhelmed, water has a remarkable way of helping us return to the present moment. That might look like:

Perhaps that's one of the reasons Cancer season resonates with me. As another water sign, Cancer reminds us that growth doesn't always require us to do more. There are seasons in life when growth looks like taking risks, setting ambitious goals, saying yes to new opportunities, and pushing ourselves just beyond what we consider “our limit”. Then there are seasons like Cancer—seasons that encourage us to check in with ourselves about those goals, opportunities and limits.

If I'm honest, this is one of the hardest invitations for me to accept. My instinct is often to stay productive—to keep planning, creating, helping, fixing, or preparing for what's next. Even when life is full of beautiful things, my nervous system doesn't always receive the message that it's okay to soften. Learning about the nervous system has completely changed the way I relate to those moments. I've come to understand that slowing down isn't laziness or a lack of motivation…It's an actual biological need.

Cancer season gently reminds me of this need. It encourages us to shift our focus away from constant productivity and toward belonging. It asks us to pay attention to our emotional world instead of trying to outrun it.

One of the greatest lessons I've learned—both personally and professionally—is that we don't have to fix our emotions. Emotions are not problems to solve. They are experiences to acknowledge. We can notice them, validate them, become curious about them, and ask what they might be trying to communicate. Some emotions move through us quickly. Others ask us to sit with them a little longer; however, none of them are permanent. When we've listened long enough to our emotions, we can thank them for their message and gently allow them to move on instead of carrying them indefinitely.

Whether or not astrology resonates with you, I hope this season serves as an invitation to reflect. And if you’re running around, not sure where to go next or what to do…. just add water.
